Child and family therapy in Madison, Wisconsin

Therapy for children and teenagers, and for the parents who bring them.

Willow Lane is a small practice near Monroe Street. Dr. Naomi Feld and Ben Osei see children between 4 and 12 in the playroom, teenagers who would rather not talk about it yet, and parents who need a plan for the week ahead.

Play therapy

Ages 4 to 12. The playroom has sand, paint, blocks and a dollhouse. Children show us what is hard long before they have the words for it.

How play therapy works

Family therapy

Parents and children in the same room, so what changes here holds at home on a Tuesday night.

Most parents wait months before they pick up the phone. You do not have to arrive with the words ready.

The first meeting is with the parents, without the children, and it takes fifty minutes. Tell us what has been happening at home and you will leave with a next step you can use that week.

Families usually arrive with something specific. Sometimes a few months of play therapy is enough. Sometimes a teenager needs an hour a week that is not the kitchen table, and sometimes the parents need a different kind of help: a plan they can keep to on the hard mornings.

Call or email and we will find a time that works for your family. The first meeting is with the parents, without the children, and it takes fifty minutes. Regular sessions run fifty minutes too, and we are in network with most major insurers.

The rooms

A playroom built for children, and quieter rooms for everyone else.

There is a sand tray, paints, blocks and a dollhouse, set out so a child can choose what to pick up first. Teenagers and parents get the two rooms at the back, where the door closes and nothing on the shelf is a toy.

Ask about your plan

When school is the thing that keeps going wrong.

We work on the mornings that start with an argument, and on homework that takes three hours. With your permission we will speak with a teacher and write down what we see, so you have something to take into a school meeting.

Ask about school support

The change we look for is what happens at home on a Tuesday night.

Parent coaching runs on its own, without your child in the room. It is about what to say when the shouting starts, how to hold a boundary you can keep on a tired evening, and what to do about screens and sleep.

Sometimes the difference is small. A child who stops leaving the table at dinner, or a teenager who offers up one thing about their day. That is the work showing up where it counts.
